Ask A Drummer: Debbie Knox-Hewson
by Guitar Center on October 19, 2015
What’s your favorite piece of drum gear?
I’ve always been really intrigued by drums. I used to go to gigs and just zone out staring at the drummer, so I think my parents figured it’d be a good idea to let me get my own kit. Before that it was pots, pans and biscuit tins.
My first kit was a traps kit and it sounded horrendous, but I loved it!
Best drum track of all time (in your humble opinion)?
Ah, that’s such a tough question! I think I’d have to say ‘Since I’ve Been Loving You’ – Celebration Day version. It’s unbelievable how amazing Bonham sounds. Anything by Bonham, Brian Blade, Clyde Stubblefield, Elvin Jones or Tony Williams.
Why the drums?
My favorite piece of gear at the moment is my 18” K Kerope crash from Zildjian. It’s pretty new on my set up and I can’t stop playing it, it’s so trashy and dark.
What are you working on now?
I am moving to Berlin for a few months. I’ve got some drum clinics around Europe lined up and a few projects in Berlin that I’m excited to get started on.
What are your words of wisdom for drummers just starting out?
Be patient and don’t get too down about what you can’t do: It’s important to encourage yourself whilst you’re learning. Find a band you like and make cool music.
